AstroImageJ

AstroImageJ (AIJ) provides an astronomy-specific friendly graphical environment and tools for accurate precision image calibration and analysis. It is focused on processing for spectrophotometric data from ground-based and space-based resources providing Flexible Image Transport (FITS) files of raw and previously calibrated images. AIJ includes tools for accurate time-based measurements and will generate light curves from aperture photometry as well as fitted profiles for exoplanet transits. Its users include

  • Astronomers of all kinds, professional, academic and amateur, who prefer a modern, well-documented and validated processing tool also compatible with command-line and Python scripting for interactive processing and analysis of their data
  • Students and anyone interested in astronomy who want a tool to visualize and explore "real" images and data from public archives for HST, JWST, and their own telescopes
  • Developers who may use the flexibility of an open source ImageJ core with the option to add modules of their own devising

Although AIJ maintains the general purpose image processing capabilities of ImageJ, AIJ is streamlined for time-series differential photometry, light curve detrending and fitting, and light curve plotting, especially for applications requiring ultra-precise light curves (e.g., exoplanet transits). Its interactive image display is designed for astronomical applications. It reads and writes standard Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) files, as well as other common image formats, provides FITS header viewing and editing, and is World Coordinate System aware, including an automated interface to the astrometry.net web portal for plate solving images. AIJ provides research-grade image calibration and analysis tools with a GUI driven approach, and is easily installed with cross-platform compatibility. It enables new users, even at the level of undergraduate student, high school student, or amateur astronomer, to quickly start processing, modeling, and plotting astronomical image data with one tightly integrated software package that works on laptops and servers alike.

This wiki offers open access to curated documentation, an archive of frequently asked questions and answers, and an active site to which registered AIJ users may contribute. The Nabble discussion forum remains available at this time, an archive of its contents is here too, while this site is a source for up to date guidance and advice on the use of AIJ at all levels.
